Title of the Group

Anatomical Sciences

Introduction of the Group

The field of anatomical sciences is one of the most important fields of basic medical sciences that studies and researches about the structure of the human body in three sub-categories as follows:

  • Anatomy (Macroscopic Anatomy / Gross Anatomy)
  • Histology (Microscopic Anatomy / Histology)
  • Developmental Anatomy / Embryology

The field of anatomy is one of the oldest fields of basic medical sciences in which the structure of the human body is studied, and dissection is considered as an important part of medical education. With the emergence and use of tools such as the light microscope, followed by the electron microscope, and advanced techniques such as histochemistry, cytochemistry, autoradiography, cell culture, and tissue engineering, the possibility of studying structure and ultrastructure has been provided, and the scope of anatomy has expanded to histology and cellular and molecular biology. Using the tools and methods mentioned, the fields of study of growth and development in species have been provided, which has led to the further expansion of this scientific branch into the sub-branches of embryology and comparative anatomy, applied anatomy, and clinical anatomy.

The Department of Anatomy and Embryology and the Department of Histology are among the oldest departments of this faculty, having begun their work since the establishment of the Ahvaz Medical Faculty in 1957 with the arrival of the first group of German professors. Given the increasing development of the scope of anatomical sciences at this university, in 1996, a specialized doctoral degree (PhD) in histology was also defined and approved by the relevant ministry. Given that histology is closely related to the field of anatomy, in the twenty-seventh session of the Supreme Planning Council dated 27/09/2004, it was decided that the specialized MSc and PhD degrees of various branches of anatomical sciences, including anatomy, histology, and embryology, would be merged and presented as a single field under the title "Anatomical Sciences."

Subsequently, the educational program for the PhD course in the field of Anatomical Sciences, approved by the thirty-first session of the Supreme Planning Council dated 29/10/2006, was announced for implementation. In March 2004, like other universities, these two groups at Ahvaz University merged and became a single group called the Department of Anatomical Sciences, which includes Histology, Anatomy, and Embryology.

The PhD in Anatomical Sciences is the highest academic degree in the field of Anatomical Sciences, which leads to the award of a degree. Individuals in this program are trained with the ability to teach, research, and manage in the above fields at national and international levels. Admissions for PhD students began in February 2007. Currently, all general and specialized units in the three orientations in this group are taught by academic members. In each year, numerous research projects are conducted in addition to MSc and PhD theses, and most of the academic members are also active in several university research centers.

Currently, the Department of Anatomical Sciences of Ahvaz Jundishapur University of Medical Sciences has 15 academic members.
